The trend for smart beta and index investing might be growing across the wealth creation industry, but when it comes to small-cap investing, you can’t beat good old-fashioned active management, according to OC Funds Management’s Rob Frost.
His OC Premium Small Cap fund returned 42.3% in 2012, more than six times the 6.6% achieved by the S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries Accumulation Index. While impressive, this result was indicative performance across the small-cap sector last year.
Virtually all small-cap funds have beaten the benchmark in the last 12 months, and Frost attributes the result to their avoidance of Australia’s challenged resources and mining companies, which comprises a significant chunk of the index.
