Investment Team

 Robert Frost (B.Com., LLB)(Head of Investments) Robert was appointed Head of Investments in 2009 and has been a Portfolio Manager since joining OC Funds Management in 2001.  Robert is also an Executive Director of OC Funds Management. Robert is responsible for the portfolio management of the OC Premium, Dynamic and Concentrated Equity Funds. Since joining OC  as a senior portfolio manager Robert has focused on primarily on the small and mid cap segments of the market and has been instrumental in enhancing the investment process and procedures of the investment team.

 
Prior to OC, Robert was a Senior Research Analyst with Austock Group specialising in small and mid-cap industrial companies. His responsibilities included business and industry analysis, financial modelling, and company valuation. Robert also spent time in the derivative divisions at UBS in London and Rabobank in the Netherlands.

 Stephen Sedgman (B.Com.) Stephen founded OC Managed Accounts Pty Ltd (formerly Patriot Managed Accounts Pty Ltd) in 2001.  Stephen has generated strong investment performance on behalf of superannuation, corporate, trust, charity and private funds. Stephen was also the co-founder of Patriot Asset Management Limited and Chairman of its Group Investment Team from July 2005 until the sale of the business in April 2010. In that period, Stephen led the investment team which achieved the rating by Zenith of the No 1 Highly Recommended Manager in the Small Cap category (including throughout the GFC).
In 1985, Stephen established SPAL Management in partnership with merchant bank, Security Pacific.  At the end of 1987, SPAL was the top performing pooled superannuation manager with a two-year compound annual return of 29%. Following ownership changes within the organisation, Stephen left SPAL in 1988 to focus on the management of listed investment corporations until founding Providence Funds Management in 1996 which went on to become Pilgrim Capital, Pilgrim Private and Patriot Managed Accounts. In 1982, Stephen was appointed Group Investment Manager of the Australian Eagle Insurance Group and took over responsibility for the Eagle Entrepreneur Fund. During Stephen’s tenure from 1982 to 1985 it was the top performing fund by a substantial margin on the annual Campbell & Cook (now Mercer) Survey. Prior to 1982, Stephen held positions as Portfolio Manager for National Australia Bank and Investment Manager for the Chamber of Manufactures Insurance Company.
 Sam Baillieu (B.Com.) Sam is one of the founders of OC Funds Management and has been a member of the Investment Team since inception. Sam is also an Executive Director of OC  Funds Management. As a senior member of the investment team, Sam focuses on the small and mid cap market and is an analyst for the Premium, Dynamic and Concentrated Funds. Sam has developed strong skills in the areas of detailed financial modelling, debt analysis and company valuation and has also developed many corporate relationships within the OC company universe.

 
Sam began his investment career at EL & C Baillieu where he was a member of the research team. Sam’s primary responsibility was to produce research for companies within the ASX100 for both the industrial and mining sector. This research largely involved site visits, detailed financial modelling and competitor analysis.

 Robert Calnon C.A. (B.Com.) Rob Calnon joined OC Funds Management as Equities Dealer/Investment Analyst in 2006.  He was promoted to Portfolio Manager in 2009. As part of the small-mid cap investment team, Rob is responsible for company/sector analysis for stocks within the OC investment universe. This process includes meeting with company management, financial modelling and valuations, analysis of broker research and industry/market analysis. Rob also has Portfolio Management responsibilities for the Alpha Plus trading component of the OC Concentrated Equity Fund.

 
Rob is a chartered accountant who qualified in KPMG’s Melbourne tax practice (five years) before moving to Sydney with Ernst & Young Corporate Finance (two years) where he was a Manager in the Mergers and Acquisitions division.   During this period, Rob completed a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment. Prior to joining OC Funds, Rob spent three years with the Bank of New York in London as a Manager in its Investment Accounting Division where he gained exposure to complex financial products (including offshore investment vehicles) and hedge funds and worked closely with some of the world’s largest funds management enterprises.

 Stephen Evans C.A. (B.Com.) Stephen joined OC Managed Accounts Pty Ltd (then Pilgrim Capital) in April 2004 as an Investment Analyst. Prior to the divestment of Patriot Asset Management in 2010, Stephen was also a member of the investment team for the Patriot Funds, and prior to its earlier divestment, Ralton Asset Management. As part of the OC investment team Stephen performs in depth analysis and financial modelling of stocks based on company visits and reports, industry statistics, broker research and other information.  Stephen has been instrumental in the design and construction of the IT framework which facilitates the various stages of the investment process from the initial screening of stocks to the final monitoring of the portfolio. Stephen’s investment systems work has brought together the various legacy systems of both OC Funds management and Patriot Asset Management/Patriot Managed Accounts into one integrated investment information system.

 
After attaining his Chartered Accountant qualification, Stephen spent two years in London with fund manager, Man Investments. This provided him with experience of complex product structuring, risk and investment systems and large scale funds management.  Stephen initially developed his financial analysis and modelling skills as a research assistant at E.L. & C. Baillieu Stockbroking. Whilst at E.L. & C. Baillieu Stockbroking, Stephen undertook in-depth statistical market modelling based on trend analysis, and provided financial modelling and research assistance for broker research and significant corporate transactions.
